My purse was stolen yesterday. After a brief tug-of-war the straps finally broke and the thief ran off with my purse. I yelled out to him to at least give me back my car keys. Surprisingly, he paused for a moment to look into the jumble of my purse, realized it would take much too long to find them and sped away. It sounds scary, but strangely it wasn't, very frustrating, yes.

I was in the Fashion District (a very loose term) in downtown L.A.. It consists of a multitude of little shops packed closely together that sell cheap unique, trendy clothing, fabrics and shoes. I go looking for that thing so unique nobody wants so it ends up in a trashy bin. Not having much money forced me to learn to be creative with other people's discards.

In the shock of the theft what amazed me is that all I could think of is how good God is to me, I felt a warm comfort that I was not alone.  I saw the kindness of usually suspicious Jewish, Iranian, Asian, and Hispanic shop owners who graciously allowed me to make toll calls on their telephones and had kind words to say. After Octavio met me with an extra set of car keys, we had a very pleasant conversation with the usually hardened LAPD police officers who took the police report. They said it was a relief for them to get away from South-Central for a while and be around nice people. Of course Octavio brought up that he had been a chaplain for the Sheriffs at one time. By the time they left one of them joked that it was too bad that my tragedy made them so happy for a brief time.

Later, we went to dinner and to buy some replacements for some of the items in my purse. Then we went to a get-together our daughter was having at her house for some of her friends (We were invited!). Everyone was very entertained by my story. I was able to repeat that all the guy took was just stuff-our lives are more than stuff. Only God can do that! He puts everything into perspective. He makes good things come out of bad.

I was again reminded we live in a broken world, (as Lewis puts it, “We live in enemy occupied territory”). It's all part of the war I'm engaged in. It is what I'm here for; to make it a better place and to bring those who have been taken hostage in.

This is only temporary.

So many of us being hit by theft lately...

I'm sorry, I'm sure it was a bit scary to say the least. I am glad you were not hurt and no other harm was done.

Like you said...it is just stuff.

I guess the reason I didn't feel afraid is that the thief looked like such a nice, clean-cut guy; like someone I would know. Perhaps that also explains why I was silly enough to ask for my keys back.

I'm sorry others have gone through this also. I hope you were'nt one of them. Though God redeems all, it's still not pleasant.

The enemy steals from us each moment of our lives.  Although your experience would have rattled me plenty, I see that God used it to have people be people for one another.

Twice this summer I have committed major driving infractions that warranted tickets (the scary thing is it was an indication of how unfocused I was on my driving = dangerous). Both times the officers approached my car (a '93 Blazer) with my old blonde lab's head hanging out the back seat window.... Both officers gently reminded me of the error of my ways and then we talked dogs and I bade them a God blessed day.

Isn't it wonderful how God brings us together with "frights" and then we carry the blessings with us as we continue to count all our blessings?

So glad you had a God blessed opportunity!

Steve had his laptop, ipod, and our digital camera stolen a couple of weeks ago while he was doing hurricane relief work.

Back when I worked, we lived in downtown Denver. I would always walk to and from work. There were some creepy looking people on my walk. Early on I decided to carry my keys and cell phone in a pocket. I always had something with a pocket on. That way I would have a way into my house and a phone to call from. I don't know if this would have worked out or not.

This sounds gruesome, but I would carry my keys spread out with one key between each of my fingers. That way if someone wanted to attack I would scratch and beat them with the claw of my keys. I had pepper spray on my keys but never trusted myself to get it from lock to unlock to blast the sucker!

I am so sorry to hear about your purse. At least you got to show some love to the police officers...

Yes, I lost major amounts of items a week and a half ago when someone broke into my car... The part about your story that fascinates me is that he actually paused as if he considered giving you back your keys. That amazes me.

Deanna,

Oh my, you had much more stolen than I had!  I'm so sorry.

The enemy's ploys are so transparent at times. I've seen him often try to discourage us from doing good by rewarding our good efforts with misfortune. He doesn't seem to know that we do good things not for a reward but out of our love for God and others. Thank God for men like Steve.

Actually, you were very wise on your walks to and from work. It's one thing to be overly fearful, it's another thing to be foolishly careless. Normally I'm a little more wary when I'm downtown, I've just been distracted lately.

Sally,

I love the following verse: "The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." Deut. 31:6. We would miss so many "divine appointments" if we believed the enemy's lie that God is far off.

It would have to be a tough old crony that would give such a nice lady and her dog a ticket.

Lori,

Wow! What is it with thieves this month! I'm so sorry about your robbery also. Let's remember to pray for each other and the Watsons as we deal with recovering our stuff.

That part of the story fascinated me also, that's why I mentioned it. It showed there was still a shred of humanity in him. It made me later picture myself dragging him by the ear to his mother who would then smack him upside the head and say, "What's wrong with you? I raised you better than that!".

What a story! I also am impressed by the fact that this man considered giving back your keys. I am glad you are okay and that people are blessed through this circumstance from the police, to the people at your daughter's party, to your blog readers. If that's not the hand of God, I don't know what is. Your expression of excitement at being invited to your daughter's party is also endearing. Is that how my mom feels when I invite her to hang out with me?

Angela,

Yes, I'm sure your mom is thrilled that you would want to hang out with her.  We are careful to not be intrusive so to be invited into your lives means we must have done something right.

Our kids are just fascinating to us.
